Gnome Mage

Once you hit around the mid 20′s, frost aoe mages can be deadly.  With talents such as improved blizzard, shhater and finally completing the base frost aoe build at level 40:  Ice Barrier.  Here is a base frost build that will take you to level 61, after that you can do what you want with it because after around level 40, you pretty much have all the skills necessary to aoe 8-10 melee mobs no problem.  The following is which skills to get and when and how to perform the aoe spell combo.  If you are having trouble leveling your mage you MUST check this leveling guide out.

Build Information, tips and more:

• This build is built for aoe in mind and pretty much just that.  There are only two points in improved frostbolt as this is not going to help your aoe out at all.  If you feel you need to do single targeting or are having trouble with pvp maybe go with 5 points.  Two points works just fine for me though especially once you get the range increase with arctic reach
• I wouldnt try to AOE until you have your three points in Improve Blizzard.  What I personally do is go fire until around level 23 and then respec.
• The reason for some fire talents is the World in Flames and Burning Determination.  Immunity is great when silenced and the critical strike increase with w.i.f to blizzard is huge.  I would get those spells after ice barrier.  (The increased bonus’s to fire blast help huge in those 1v1 or pvp moments too.)
• You want to be grinding on melee characters.  If you have ranged or spell casters they will interupt your blizzard.

How to Perform the AoE

• Ice Barrier  (If you dont have ice barrier yet just use your frost shields)

• Mount

• Grab about 8-10 mobs depending on how comforatble you are with the aoe.  Start with around 4 and build your way up.

• Ice block, that way they will bunch around you while you are invulnerable.

• Frost Nova (Traps them in place)

• Blink

• Blizzard

• Blizzard  (They should be dead by now) But if not….

• Cone of Cold

• Frost Nova

• Blink

• Blizzard

• Arcane Explosion anyone still alive

Again, If you are having trouble leveling your Mage I highly suggest you check out Zygor’s Leveling Guide because it has a perfect Mage leveling path that gets you to 80 faster and easier than any other way.  No matter what level you are, you load the thing and it points with an arrow the direction to each monster, quest giver, trainer etc.  Its pretty crazy.  It also has an in game box that tells you exactly what to do, like kill 5 boars, run west 10 miles, etc.  You can find out more here or check out the review.

There is definitely a lot of AE (area effect damage) going on in World of Warcraft dungeon runs at the moment. We’re not too worried about it for now – on the contrary it’s nice to see so many people doing the level-up dungeons on the way to level 80. If we find that AE tank + AE damage strategy (with no sheeping, sapping or other crowd control) is the only way people are running heroics and raids, then we’ll probably make some changes, but for now we’re content to just see what happens.

Having said all that, we feel like a few groups are being left out of the AE fun, which makes them of less utility in the 5-player dungeons. We aren’t able to provide a lot of details yet, but here are some upcoming changes we’re making.

Shaman – we are removing the threat component from Fire Nova Totem and Magma Totem and increasing the damage from Magma Totem. This should provide the Elemental shamans in particular with some formidable AE.

Rogue – we are removing the cooldown from Fan of Knives and adjusting the damage calculation slightly to make daggers more useful for this ability.

Druid – we are adding Swipe (Cat) as a baseline ability.

As is the case with most multi-target abilities, these three should be something you want to use when faced with groups, but never against single targets. Fan of Knives and Swipe, for example, don’t grant combo points so they should never be a core part of the rotation against single targets (like most bosses).

These changes will be available in the next minor content update, so keep an eye out for the next PTR push.
